Titanium or ceramic? Many people ask themselves this question when considering implants. Today we explain what we think speaks in favor of titanium implants. And when we still recommend ceramic implants.

In this blog article you will learn …

  • … the advantages of a titanium implant.
  • … how titanium compares to ceramic.
  • … why you can pass through airport security without any problems with titanium implants.

“Titanium implants have proven themselves in implantology for decades. Titanium is extremely well tolerated and allergic reactions are exceptionally rare.”
Dr. med. dent. Andreas Quidenus, M. Sc. Oral Surgery & Implantology

Titanium implants: Excellent tolerability without significant side effects

Millions of people wear dentures on titanium implants. We have also been using titanium successfully in our practice for many years. Extensive studies have shown that titanium is highly biocompatible. The material also impresses with its antibacterial effect. This minimizes possible inflammation after implantation.

Further advantages of titanium implants:

  • Strength and durability: Titanium is stable and extremely resilient. So you can enjoy your third teeth for many years to come.
  • Integration with the bone: Titanium “fuses” perfectly with the surrounding jawbone. In technical terms, we call this “osseointegration”. For you, this means that you can put full weight on your third teeth more quickly.
  • Availability: There are thousands of different titanium implant systems on the market. This allows us to find the right artificial tooth root for you and your individual situation.

Implants: Ceramic or titanium?

Ceramic implants have been attracting increased attention in recent years. They are considered to be particularly esthetic and natural. However, you should know that:

  • Ceramic is more brittle than titanium and therefore less resilient.
  • Ceramic implants require more time to grow into the jawbone.
  • There are only a few systems on the market and implantation is not always possible.

Important for you: We advise you individually on all options and find the best solution for you and your health.

How likely is titanium intolerance?

Titanium intolerance is rare. Today, we can rule this out in advance with a blood test. If you are still affected, ceramic implants may be your alternative. We would be happy to advise you in our practice in Vienna.

Titanium implants:
Answers to frequently asked questions

Will my titanium implants stop at airport security?

You can remain completely relaxed. Modern body scanners recognize titanium implants and do not raise the alarm. You will also receive an implant passport from us. In the event that an older device does sound the alarm, you will be able to verify your implant.

Titanium implants: Who covers the costs?

Implants are not covered by statutory health insurance. Whether your private insurance pays for implants is determined by your tariff. You will receive detailed information from us before treatment.

Can I have an MRI with a titanium implant?

Although titanium is a metal, it has an antimagnetic effect. A magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) examination is possible without risk. However, you should inform your doctor about the implant(s) before the examination.
