Not every dental problem can be solved with a simple filling. Inflamed teeth, deep-set wisdom teeth or tooth loss require surgical expertise. You are about to have an operation and have many questions: How does the operation work? How severe is the pain afterwards? How long will it take to heal? This uncertainty is completely normal.
As an oral surgeon in Vienna, I will guide you through this process. My specialization covers the broad spectrum of oral surgery, from the removal of wisdom teeth to apicoectomy, cyst removal and implantation. Every procedure is carefully planned and you will be told exactly what to expect beforehand.
Find out what you can expect from oral surgery and how we can guide you through your treatment in the best possible way.
The procedure itself is painless under local anesthesia, so you will not feel anything during the entire procedure. After removal, we close the wound with an autologous blood-fibrin patch, which specifically supports the healing process and significantly reduces complications. Most patients report that the discomfort is far less than they feared. After around three days, the swelling subsides noticeably and healing is usually problem-free with few complications.
An apicoectomy is necessary if an inflammation at the root tip does not heal despite root canal treatment. It offers the chance to preserve the tooth instead of having to extract it, especially if the original root canal treatment was carried out correctly. In this procedure, the oral surgeon removes the inflamed root tip and seals the root canal from below. The success rate is over 80 percent, which is why this procedure is often the last option for tooth preservation.
The procedure itself is completely painless as it is performed under local anesthesia.
The typical procedure looks like this:
Most patients are largely symptom-free again just a few days after the procedure. Superficial wound healing is usually quick and has few complications.
After bone augmentation in the jaw, the body needs around 6 months for the new bone supply to grow together stably with the existing jawbone. During this time, osseointegration takes place, in which the body's own bone builds through the bone replacement material. Depending on the initial situation and the available bone, the implant can sometimes also be inserted directly during bone augmentation in the same session.

Dental implants permanently replace lost teeth. If there is insufficient bone, we first build up the bone with bone replacement materials or autologous blood to ensure a stable hold.

With this method, we use your own blood components to heal the wound. The platelet-rich plasma promotes regeneration and accelerates the healing process.

You often need a sinus lift for implants in the maxillary posterior region. This involves lifting the maxillary sinus mucosa and creating space for bone augmentation underneath the maxillary sinus.

PRF membranes made from the patient's own blood close wounds biologically and reduce swelling. This technique minimizes complications and ensures more comfortable healing after oral surgery.

Surgical tooth removal is one of our routine procedures. We also gently remove impacted teeth that remain in the jaw under local anesthesia or sedation.

If root canal treatment is not sufficient, we surgically remove the inflamed root tip. This method offers high success rates and preserves your natural tooth in the long term.

Tight frenulum can cause speech problems or orthodontic complications. We correct these with a short, outpatient procedure for better function and aesthetics.

Cysts in the jawbone are usually benign, but should be surgically removed. We operate on cysts gently and monitor the healing process closely to ensure a complication-free recovery.
Implants offer numerous advantages over conventional dentures and bridges. Find out why many patients opt for this high-quality solution.
Implants look and feel like your own teeth. You chew, speak and laugh completely naturally - no one will be able to tell the difference to your natural teeth.
The implant stimulates the jawbone like a natural tooth root through the load when chewing. This preserves the bone structure and prevents the typical bone loss associated with tooth loss.
The implant is firmly anchored in the jaw - there is no wobbling, slipping or pressure points as with removable dentures. You enjoy absolute security when eating, speaking and laughing.
With good care, implants often last a lifetime. The initial investment pays off in terms of durability - an economical decision compared to the repeated replacement of conventional solutions.
Bite down hard again, laugh carefree and appear self-confident. Dental implants give you back a bit of quality of life and strengthen your self-confidence in your private and professional life.

Many patients are unsure about what costs they will incur and what their health insurance will cover. We provide you with transparent information about health insurance benefits and elective doctor reimbursement.
Our practice works as an elective practice. You initially pay for the treatment privately and submit the invoice to your health insurance company. Depending on the procedure, you will be reimbursed between 40 and 80 percent of the health insurance tariff.
The advantage: longer treatment times, detailed consultation and state-of-the-art equipment such as our digital volume tomograph. There is usually no reimbursement for implantology. We will provide you with a transparent cost estimate.
The exact costs depend on the individual effort. Give us a call and we will discuss the estimated costs in detail. After the initial examination with DVT, you will receive a precise cost plan.
The Austrian Health Insurance Fund (ÖGK) covers part of the costs of medically necessary oral surgery. This includes the removal of wisdom teeth in cases of discomfort or inflammation, cyst operations and certain forms of apicoectomy.
For implants, the basic treatment does not provide for a subsidy, except in the case of tooth loss due to an accident. Bone augmentation in preparation for implants is also not covered by health insurance.
During your first visit to our practice, we will take the time for a thorough examination. We use the digital volume tomograph to create precise 3D images of your jaw and discuss all treatment methods in detail.
You will receive a detailed treatment plan with all the steps from the procedure to aftercare. We will explain the exact costs, insurance reimbursement and, if necessary, organize a general anaesthetic for your treatment.
On the day of surgery, we perform the planned procedure under local or general anesthesia. Whether bone augmentation, wisdom tooth removal or root tip resection, we work with microsurgical techniques for gentle and precise treatment.
After the procedure, you will stay with us briefly for observation. You will be given precise rules of conduct and painkillers for the first few days. During follow-up visits, we will check the healing process and remove the stitches.

More InformationNot every wisdom tooth needs to be removed.
Surgical removal is necessary for
Many dentists recommend preventive removal in young adulthood, as healing is usually faster then. We will advise you individually after the DVT analysis.
The costs vary depending on the effort involved:
As an elective doctor, we bill privately. The ÖGK will reimburse a portion if medically necessary. Call us for a specific offer.
The swelling usually reaches its peak on the second or third day after the operation and then slowly subsides. The swelling should have largely disappeared after around 7 to 10 days.
What helps against swelling:
Wisdom teeth are removed in our practice in two sessions. In the first appointment, we remove both wisdom teeth on the top and bottom of the left side, followed by the right side in the second appointment. This procedure has the advantage that you can always chew normally on one side and the stress remains manageable. At the same time, you only have to go through the healing phase twice and lose less comfort in everyday life overall. We will advise you individually based on the position of your wisdom teeth and your personal situation.
All three variants are possible:
Local anesthesia: The standard for uncomplicated cases. You are awake but feel no pain. You are aware of pressure and noises.
Optional Psychpax drops: A mild sedative that you take shortly before the procedure to reduce tension and dental anxiety.
General anesthesia: You sleep deeply and have no memory of the operation. Useful for very extensive procedures or extreme dental anxiety.
The costs range from local anesthesia to general anesthesia. We will discuss with you which option is best suited to your situation.

Many dentists recommend preventive removal in young adulthood, as healing is usually faster then. We will advise you individually after the DVT analysis.
The procedure itself is painless under local anesthesia or sedation. Afterwards, the discomfort varies greatly from person to person, but is usually less severe than expected.
Typical course:
Factors that influence pain:
We use bone augmentation with autologous blood (PRF) for natural wound healing. This reduces swelling and noticeably accelerates healing.
The waiting time is usually 3 to 6 months, depending on the extent of the bone augmentation and the bone quality. During this time, the bone replacement material grows together with your own jawbone. In the case of smaller defects, we can sometimes perform bone augmentation and implantation in one session if there is sufficient stability. After the healing phase, we use DVT to check whether the bone is sufficiently firm. We then insert the implant safely. The waiting time is worthwhile for long-term success.
Complete healing after an apicoectomy takes several months:
First 7-10 days: swelling subsides, stitches are removed
2-3 weeks: Wound has healed superficially
3-6 months: Bone regenerates completely around the treated root tip
After this period, the tooth should be firm and free of pain. We check the healing process regularly with x-rays.
Root apex resection is always an attempt to preserve your natural tooth, which is always better than losing a tooth. A natural tooth offers a natural chewing sensation and costs less in the long term than a dental implant. However, tooth preservation is not always successful. The success rate is around 80 percent. If the tooth is severely damaged, has several root canals or the bone is severely degraded due to bone loss, extraction followed by implantation may be the better solution. We will advise you individually after the examination in our dental practice in Vienna.
The success rate of an apicoectomy is around 80 to 90 percent if it is performed under optimal conditions. With microsurgical techniques and precise 3D planning, the chances are much higher today than in the past.
The attempt is worthwhile if:
Alternatively, consider an implant:
A natural tooth offers a natural chewing sensation and costs less in the long term than an implant. We analyze your case with DVT and recommend the most sensible solution.
In the first 2 to 3 days after root apex resection, moderate pain and swelling occur, similar to after wisdom tooth surgery. This can be well controlled with painkillers. The wound in the mouth heals superficially within 7 to 10 days, then we remove the stitches. The bone around the treated root tip regenerates completely over 3 to 6 months. The tooth should then be firm and pain-free. Most patients report that the pain was significantly less than they had feared.
